Question:
A final attempt to find a respectable home for this thing, or it will be off
to the science museum...
ruby laser. Anybody help?
Answer:
- "SpaceRays" was a brand of ruby laser used for medical applications in
the late 60's- early/mid '70's. I serviced these lasers in several
hospitals in the early '70's. They were used for tattoo removal.
- I wish I could take this off your hands. However I have neither the
money or the means to pick it up from you.
- I know exactly what you mean. I almost resisted the temptation myself when I
took the thing on in the first place. But I caved in and consequently had
much fun with it, to the dismay of my old flatmate at the time who basically
hid from it (and me). But I was kind enough not to operate it near other
forms of life, roughly including my flatmate.
But now I must unfortunately offload the thing at all costs as the lovely
person who now shares this house with me doesn't share my love for this
laser :-) And storage costs mount up due to the fact I have no garage. (It
would look scary in the car park and doesn't have an integral umbrella).
But I have taken some nice photos of it yesterday so it can go in my album
under 'tech nostalgia'. I'll just have to grit my teeth at the price it is
currently fetching
- Well that clears up some mystery for me. The engineer who owned it before me
indicated that a similar laser was used in an LLR experiment in England, in
connection with the same lab, although thats as much info as I had.
Having said that, I would be _very_ nervous about having any tattoo removed
with this thing. I've seen what it does to basic materials, even without a
lens. I just imagined this to be too big for medical use.
